Our History
From the early days near Muskrat Park.
The St. Michaels Farmers Market (SMFM) is a non-profit, producer-only farmers market located in charming St. Michaels on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Started in 1998 as the second-ever outpost of the renowned FreshFarm, we’ve grown to become our own independent, community-run market with 20-plus vendors, dozens of volunteers, and hundreds of visitors on Saturday mornings from spring through fall.
A leader in the local food movement, the SMFM is the only producer-only farmers market in Talbot County, and one of only a handful on the entire Delmarva Peninsula. Our core mission is to support local farmers and food producers while fostering a community-based food system. We are promote sustainable agriculture, provide farmers with vital economic opportunities, and improve fresh food access and equity as a proud provider of SNAP, WIC, and EBT nutritional benefits, for which we also offer matching dollars and additionally donate market surplus to local food pantries. We aim to educate the public about the importance of knowing your farmer and eating #positivelylocal.
In addition to farmers and food growers, we also host live music, pop-up vendors, and community-education tents from our local community organizations, such as the public library, master gardeners, and more.
