The St. Michaels Farmers Market seeks a dynamic market manager to oversee operations of our seasonal market on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Market Manager serves as the face of the SMFM and plays a key role in our success. Responsibilities include leading day-of market operations, overseeing vendor management, and working closely with our Board and volunteers. This role involves strong communication and problem-solving skills, professional customer service, and passion for community. This is a part-time, year-round, salaried, contractor position. Hours vary throughout the season. Start date ASAP.
Market Manager Responsibilities:
Operations:
Attend all (+/- 33) Saturday morning markets during season (7 a.m.-12 noon., with occasional absences permitted).
Oversee day-of market operations, including setup, breakdown, vendor liaison, volunteer management, rule and regulation enforcement, and customer relations.
Weekly market preparation to coordinate vendor attendance.
Collaborate with Board on vendor recruitment and retention.
Administration and Finance:
Check and respond to market email promptly.
Monitor market data.
Ensure timely financial record-keeping each week via various online platforms.
Submit weekly report on previous market-day operations.
Attend weekly virtual team meeting.
Attend monthly in-person Board meeting.
Customer Service and Communication:
Establish high-quality market experience for customers, vendors, and volunteers.
Ensure positive, effective, and timely communication with vendors and Board.
Communicate the SMFM’s mission to customers.
Work to develop familiarity with farmers, local food system, and community.
Compensation and Schedule:
Year-round, part-time, salaried, contractor position.
Hours range: roughly 3-5 hours/week off-season and upwards of 20 hours/week in-season.
Start date: ASAP, beginning with a training period.
Contract period: Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2026, to be renewed annually based upon review.
Dedicated laptop and cell phone provided.
Qualifications:
Exemplary communication, customer service, and collaboration skills.
Detail-oriented with strong administrative, organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
Physical requirements, must be able to: work outdoors in all weather conditions for five hours; regularly carry, push, or pull at least 50 pounds; set-up and breakdown market equipment (tents, tables, signage) with volunteer help.
Digital proficiency (including text messages and email).
Familiarity with, or willingness to become familiar with, software programs such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, QuickBooks, and our software platform Marketspread.
Outgoing, friendly, and inclusive.
Experience leading, managing, or directing individuals and/or teams is a plus.
Passion for food, community, and the environment is a plus.
Farm experience not required.
Own transportation required.
